New EU referendum podcast

Just a quick note to let you know that myself and Christopher Silver are the guests on this week's edition of the Newsnet podcast, hosted as always by Derek Bateman.  We discuss the horrific murder of Jo Cox, the potential implications for the EU referendum, and also how a Leave vote might affect Scotland and the rest of the continent.  You can listen to the podcast HERE.

  1. As usual - interesting discussion. There is going to be hell to pay if Brexit occurs, because the majority of MP's are pro EU, and they will never vote for anything other than the UK being part of EFTA, with access to the single market, and once people realise that they've swapped membership of the EU for "2nd class Norway-style" associate membership, the situation could turn very ugly. Let's hope enough Scots turn to independence, so that we can get away from the mayhem that will ensue. Having said all that, I still think a narrow "Remain" vote will happen next Thursday.

    1. Except the EFTA states will not accept the UK as a member. They have said in the past they would not have a state who's population would dwarf their own combined. Were that not the case, Turkey would have been a member already. As for bilaterals, the UK will not get a deal that does not include free movement. The Swiss may yet find themselves kicked out for not full implementation of free movement as soon as February next year.

If the swivel eyed loons think that the EU will lay down to their dictats they've a shock coming their way. Brexit may hurt their ecconomies too.

  2. Ok having asked a couple of times about the Scottish poll for the EU Referendum but no answer from anyone on this poll site, I've found there is 59% Remain, 33% Leave. lol

  3. Markets today seem confident of Remain. Ruthie's been at the postal votes again?

    1. Well, apparently two new polls will shortly be released putting Remain ahead, so the semi-leaking of those may explain some of it. But we don't know how big the leads are going to be yet, and that's the crucial point.

    2. I'm amazed how little attention is being given to turnout. We'll know on the day if it really is as dire as everything is pointing to because you can't hide how empty polling stations are to those few who do vote.

    3. I think the turnout is going to be reasonably healthy, to be honest. I wouldn't have said that a month ago, but the closeness of the race has led to more public interest.

    4. I agree with you James, regarding turnout. I was expecting a pretty low turnout about a month back, too. I was in Bournemouth over the weekend. Certainly wasn't like Scotland during the indyref (No signs that I could see), but I could tell that it was something of a topic of conversation. Went to buy a few things in the local Waitrose and heard some young shelf stackers chatting about the issue. They were mostly for Leave.

Obviously not going to be an indyref turnout, but I won't be surprised if it gets to the 70% mark.

    1. Well, Slovakia are an EU member state and England aren't, so I feel by rights my loyalties should be with Slovakia. But I'm sure you'll agree with me, Aldo, that what really matters is that football is the winner tonight.
